with more emphasis on keys & percussion than his earlier work, >night and day< became a hybrid of latin rhythms and jazzy horns & pianos, with stylish synths & splashy pop that perfectly reflects the new york of the early 80s. riding on the single >steppin out<, for which he was nominated for a grammy, the album crept to the number 4 position on the american and number 3 in the british charts, and eventually went gold. this is the first vinyl edition since 1985!

originally recorded for chris blackwell of island records the rights of ‘life of contradiction’ were then given to joe higgs who released the album in jamaica and the u.k. in 1975. it was immediately obvious that this was a unique collection coming from a completely different direction to the other reggae releases of the period. although joe had first recorded some of the songs in the early sixties for studio one it was as if he was at last able to realise a vision of his own music that had previously been denied to him: either by financial constraints or from not having the right situation with the right musicians.

the original mix of >amygdala< by joe joyce offers a revival of more traditional techno rhythms, accompanied by oriental percussion and bell like timbres. vocal drones instill a feeling of suspense and darkness, before a release of melodic gamelans calm and soothe your amydalas fight or flight response. enjoy the ride! amygdala is supported by two exceptional remixes from maya jane coles and nadja lind, which take the track to completely different corners.

a great track from joe & ubit (aka hugo), remixed by two of the founders of the label (phooka & maurizio cascella) and great guest artist, hubble. the original track is a pure concentrate of techno and filtered tools. voices, percussion and bleeps all mixed with a relentless and powerful bassline. phooka rmx is a swell of synth and bass, which offers a glimpse into the psyche of the listener, a drive of techno beats & a powerful dancefloor-orientated track. hubble gives us a masterpiece, a mental and dark version, in line with his other works and his unique and personal style! maurizio cascella closes the rmx and transform the original track with a heavy groove and loops the song, making it a unique and potent dj tool, a must-have for all djs.
